Following a series of Viking raids, he led his community to safer fields in Belgium.
On 2 February 957 Columbanus became a hermit in the cemetery near the church of Saint Bavo, Ghent.
He developed a wide reputation for holiness and attracted new followers.
His name is in the litany to be recited in Belgium during public emergencies.
