He condemned Eutyches, who began the heresy of Monophysitism.
He refused to bribe Emperor Theodosius II in order to hold his seat, and against Theodosius's wishes, he made the emperor's sister Pulcherius a deaconess.
Theodosius had him deposed and exiled.
When he tried to appeal Pope Leo the Great to hold his seat, he was beaten so badly that he died three days later from his wounds.
