- Son of a Roman consul, and raised as a pagan.
Converted to Christianity as a young man.
Friend of Saint Caprasius; brother of Saint Venantius.
Lived and studied monasticism in Greece, Egypt and Palestine.
When he returned to France, he founded the abbey of Lérins on the isle of the same name off the coast of Provence, France.
Abbot of the house.
In 426 he was ordered to accept the archbishopric of Arles, Gaul (modern France).
Worked against the Arian and Manichaean heresies, and re-established orthodoxy.
