His reputation for holiness spread, and he began to attract would-be disciples.
To escape them he sneaked away, and became a monk at Lérins.
He was sent by his bishop back to Reomay as abbot of its monastery, which became Mount Saint Jean in his honour, he became one of the pioneers of Western monasticism.
So strict in his refusal to be around women, he refused to receive his own mother when she visited the monastery.
