- Hermit in a cave in Mesopotamia on the banks of the Euphrates near Edess, and then on Mount Sinai.
Legend says he ate only once a week.
Ministered to and encourged Christians persecuted by Julian the Apostate.
Enemies proclaimed that Julian was a follower of Arianism.
He travelled to Antioch in 372, made several public speeches against the heresy - then returned to his cave where he lived the rest of his life.
