A soldier when young, he initially planned on a military career. He gave up the military life to become a Benedictine monk at Corbie, France under Saint Pascasius Radbert. Tutor to the sons of Charles Martel. Abbot in 851. Bishop of Beauvais in 861. Known as a reformer in his diocese. Mediator between Pope Nicholas I and Archbishop Hincmar of Rheims, France.
