- During the persecutions of Diocletian, he sought refuge in the deserts of Upper Egypt, and became one of the earliest Egyptian desert hermits.
Friend and spiritual director of Saint Pachomius.
Worked to develop the spiritual lives of other desert hermits by bringing them together; this was part of the foundation of Christian monasticism.
