Venerable Roger Ashton

Profile
Third son of Richard Ashton. Soldier in the army of the Earl of Leicester who fought against Spain in the Low Countries in 1585. Worked with Sir William Stanley to return the town of Deventer to Spain, and joined the Catholic Spanish cause on 29 January 1587. He returned to England in 1587 and was arrested late in the year. Imprisoned in the Tower of London and the prison of Mashalsea. He escaped, fled to Lancashire, but was arrested at Shields while trying to leave England. Imprisoned in Durham, then York, then Canterbury, before being martyred for his loyalty to Rome.
