Seventh of the 21 ecumenical councils that have been held by the Church. The council’s eight sessions, called by Pope Adrian I, and influenced by Empress Irene, ran from 24 September through 23 October 787, and was attended by 300 bishops. The council condemned Iconoclasm, which held that the use of images was idolatry; and Adoptionism, which claimed that Christ was not the Son of God by nature but by adoption. This was the last council regarded as ecumenical by Orthodox Churches.
