- John Singleton
Son of William. Studied at Saint Omer in France, in Rome, Italy, and in Valladolid and Madrid in Spain. Jesuit novice in 1609, but apparently never made his final vows. Ordained in Salamanca, Spain. Returned to the British Isles in 1621 to minister to covert Catholics. Imprisoned in Flintshire, Wales in April 1629 for refusing the oath of allegiance. Sentenced by the Star Chamber in 1632 to have his ears nailed to the pillory for accusing judges of treason. Imprisoned in London, England, and condemned to death for the crime of being a priest. Martyr.
