Venerable Marcelle Mallet

Profile

Entered the novitiate of the Grey Nuns of Montreal on 6 May 1824, making her final profession on 18 May 1826. She worked in the Nuns‘s soup kitchen, cared for nelgected children, helped disabled women. At the request of her bishop Mother Marcelle and four other sisters founded the Institute of the Sisters of Charity of Québec; it received formal approval in 1849. The sisters worked with cholera victims, and when money ran short, they worked nights to make candles for sale. The Institute, dedicated to the care of children, the sick and the elderly, continues their good work today in Canada, the United States, Japan, Paraguay, Argentina and Congo.
